Yes, you already have a list of potential clients! Your existing network is THE place to start making things happen. Take some time to look back into your professional journey, including associations and mentorship opportunities. Think of every person as a connection to those decision-makers you want to reach. Referred leads close four times faster because you’ve already been “vetted” for your skills and professionalism, in a sense.

It starts with your advocates 

One of the first tasks I give my clients is to develop a Dream list — a strategy developed by Chet Holmes, and it’s as simple as making a list of potential clients. Begin with your close circle; these are your advocates, the ones who know the quality of your work and expertise. How can you leverage existing relationships to create opportunities for yourself?

A few ideas include:

  • Previous corporate coworkers who have transitioned into executive roles
  • Individuals you might report to in corporate America who empowered your career
  • Contacts you made at networking events such as conferences or informal meetings

Now remember, we’re also dreaming big here, so make room for those people who represent a future milestone in your business.

On the other hand, could you be missing out on potential clients within your family circle? Sometimes it might seem as if your family doesn’t fully understand your professional goals. I encourage you to make sure they understand what you do and what you’re aiming towards. They will be your biggest advocates for helping to build and fill your lead pipeline.

It ALL starts with people

At the end of the day, no matter your business model or revenue goals, we are all in the business of people. People are inspired, moved, and responsive to what’s simple. So don’t make it too complicated; stop using your valuable time looking for an elaborate plan of action when YOU are the best communications strategy.

Be authentic, transparent, and dare to be savvy about your business. Make sure you’re thinking about strategic relationship building, making sure those close to you know your unique expertise and the value it brings to their businesses.
